They give you a %1000 + multiplier for scanning flora and fauna. You can quickly make a lot of units just be exploring and scanning.

Like, Nanite clusters are so easy to get just by playing normally, damn near everything drops them. apart from drones and possibly ships that you destroy, what else drops them....a lot of them not just 5 or 6 at a time. #2.
