Say you have 3 chests worth 20 gold each, that's 60 gold; if you merge them, you'll get 1 chest that's only worth 50 gold. But, if you were to merge 5 (worth 100 gold total), you would end up with 2 chests worth 50 gold each. This would be a better method if you already have a bunch of them.There's no way I'll ever get a level 5 chest lol. You should mention the den chest in your den chat. Alot of people probably still don't know about it, since it's a new feature. Most of my den members caught on late as well, but we still managed the level 5 chest once they noticed.
