Echinoid

Members of the echinoid order Spatangoida, a highly diverse and abundant marine invertebrate clade, were important denizens of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway (WIS), an epicontinental seaway that divided North America in two during an interval of greenhouse conditions between roughly 100 and 65 million years ago.

[Photo: Uwe Wössner, HLRS] Welcome to the winter semester 2023/2024.Mar 22, 2022 · A study led by researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego provides new insight on the origins and early evolution of echinoids, a group of marine animals that includes modern sea urchins, sand dollars, and their relatives. Echinoidea (Sea Urchins, Sand Dollars) Echinoids are globe-shaped to disk-shaped echinoderms commonly covered with spines. They move about with their many tube feet on the sea bottom and eat algae. Their many spines are usually moveable. Echinoid fossils are common to rare from the Ordovician to the present.
