The longsword is an extremely flexible weapons, and you can probably make it work on any build you pick. The real question is what other weapons or spells do you want to use later in the game? A quality build (40/40) gives you the option to use almost every physical weapon in the game and still do decent damage.Of the two, I prefer longsword. My favorite straight sword is the lothric knight though. It has less damage but higher range. And the damage decrease is pretty much negligible. Use the one that feels right, that'll get you further than picking the highest damaging.
2 months later and Dark Sword is still pretty op, especially with a Chaos infusion. both the bastard and the claymore are basically out done by the flamberge. which has similar stats , more damage and bleed.
