I'm going to use the 882 heads as the first example. The Chevy 882's didn't have good compression, because they had larger combustion chambers. They usually only gave a 9:1 compression on a Chevy 350 with flat top pistons. But, they did flow good from the factory, even with 1.94" and 1.50" valves. (Most high perf. Chevy heads had 2.02" / 1.60 ...Basically, an 882 head is a good head----------------------until it cracks. It is NOT a question of IF it will crack, but WHEN it will crack. Here is some historical information about SB Chevy heads that many people do no realize. First, 1974 was the last year for the "good" thick heads on a factory production SB engine.The 487 heads are quite decent for what they are. They are the best of the smog heads. They were used on the LT-1's in the early '70s. They have good inlet ports and are basically identical to the fuellie heads except that they have 76 CC chambers for less compression.
