Iirc, the first Witcher gear you can craft is the Griffin armour. The first recipe for it is in Dragonslayer Grotto. Have to be level 11, I think, to wear the base version. There's tons of online guides, and the Faq on this site does a good job of walking you through the process as well. You can do this by casting the Igni Sign on it repeatedly or by throwing bombs like the Dragon's Dream Bomb or the Dancing Star Bomb.
