Descriptivists
In the world of grammarians there are two competing camps: descriptivists and prescriptivists. Edward Finegan of the University of Southern California sums up the difference: Descriptive grammarians ask the question, “What is English (or another language) like – what are its forms and how do they function in various situations?” By contrast, prescriptive grammarians ask ...Prescriptivists are of the view that correct usage should be defined by grammarians and authorities and they insist on correctness based on rules. In other words, they adhere to old rules. Descriptivists, on the other hand, say that the way a lot of people use the language is correct and promotes an evidence-based approach.Descriptivists believe that language is a dynamic, ever-changing entity, and that there is no such thing as "correct" or "incorrect" when it comes to how native speakers use their language.
